I am in the same position as that mother(although I’m old enough to be her mother!) and worry about the few gifts I feel obligated to buy. I do most of my Christmas & birthday shopping during the year-round sales, and find that does help with the on-going cash crunch. That way I can also take my time and buy something that I perceive as being “exactly right” for someone – at a fraction of the regular (read “exorbitant) price! Art & Crafts shows are particularly good for this. You can usually bargain with the vendors, without taking advantage of them.
