I love ‘No Name’ products and my wallet does too! I’m sure by now you’ve seen this line of generic brand groceries and household products sold by Canada’s largest food retailer Loblaws Companies Limited. And if you haven’t … today’s your lucky day!
At first, most consumers are quick to avoid the No Name brands. One would assume the quality is not up to par with Brand Name products. Well this may be the only time you’d be more than happy to admit you’re wrong. ‘No Name’ Brands are not only affordable but they are actually of GOOD quality. Yes, Good quality! How could this be you ask? It’s a ‘No Name’. You don’t know where it’s coming from! That’s not entirely true.
I’m going to let you in on a secret and tell you how they come to be. The way the No Name products are manufactured is simple; the manufacturer of a ’Brand Name’ product has an excess capacity on their product line. In order to prevent wasting the excess capacity, they would then use the excess capacity to produce the same quality product as the Brand Name and sell it to retailers cheaper. The retailers would then use their store brand label such as Complements by FreshCo; Great Value, Equate by Walmart; or No Name by No Frills. This is a win-win situation for both the manufacturer and retailer, not to mention the consumer, who would get a brand quality product at a non-brand (No Name, less known) price.
Our credit counsellors at Credit Canada Debt Solutions Inc. are always encouraging our clients to be smart shoppers to help them stay within their budgets. And guess what? Using No Name, or store brand products could save you a couple of hundred dollars a month for a family of four. I know, because I do it myself.
No Name products are available in stores across Canada that include Loblaws, No frills, Real Canadian Superstore, Your Independent Grocer, Valu-mart, Zehrs, Fortinos, Provigo, Extra Foods, Super-Valu, Maxi, SaveEasy, and Atlantic Superstore. So the next time you shop at the supermarket do not run away from the No Name shelf like it’s a plague, and give it a try. It would save you a lot of money without sacrificing quality.
Happy smart shopping!

Loblaw No Name Brand all come from India. I think we should help our own Canadian companies.
You’ve struck a chord, Mandy. I know a lot of folks who assume the quality of most generic products is sub par. Spreading truth about the matter is certainly good for all who want or need to stretch their dollars.
