Coupon collecting hobby resurrected

by Imelda Corney on June 30, 2010

I am one of those who clip and collect store coupons thinking, ‘I could save money’. At times, I would spend a half-hour cutting out coupons and piling them up in my ‘coupon box’. But I never used them- my collection became a hobby.

One day as I was cutting out some, a light goes off in my head.  It was Airmiles Bonus Days Celebration for the week so off I went to my favourite pharmacy with health and beauty coupons and Airmiles bonus coupon. Lo and behold! I came home excited with the extra $10.00 bonus coupon for my next purchase, discounts and three times extra Airmiles for the $50.00 worth of purchase I made.

Gee that wasn’t so bad, so now I watch for flyers and defer my shopping to take advantage of specials. Yesterday was Senior’s Day at my favourite pharmacy so I grabbed my husband (who is not happy to have just turned 65) and went shopping. Guess what? I saved $17.00, got an extra $10 bonus coupon for my next purchase and earned Airmiles.

Really not bad for the fun I had. My collection is diminishing but my motivation is increasing. I can’t wait for the next time.

I use coupons every chance I can get (much to my kids chagrin). The caveat though, at least for myself, is not to use sales or coupons as an excuse to spend where I would otherwise not have gone purchasing. There is a veil of self delusion that can occur when I see a sale and think great! 30% off today… on something I wasn’t going to buy in the first place. There may be something my family has been not buying because of the cost then a great sale comes along, i.e. Father’s Day we bought Dad a great patio lounge chair at 50% off and they were flying off the shelves! It was a a wonderful surprise for my husband and it was within our budget so good stuff all round. I will now avoid the ads until we have some extra $’s in the budget.

Good one. I use coupons myself and my kids laugh at how many points I have for different things. For instance i save on Sobeys points and use it for Christmas food shopping.
